Honolulu Marathon
Want to hear the pitter-patter of feet? Multiplied 25,000 times? Yes, it's that time
again, so mark your calendars for Sunday, December 12 for the Honolulu Marathon. The
Ala Moana Jaycees, with the help of many other Jaycee chapters, will be coordinating
activities at the Start Line of the Honolulu Marathon.
Volunteers are needed from 1 a.m. to help direct traffic, unload buses, guide runners,
demarcate the staging areas, and many other activities. At 5:30 a.m., a blast from a
howtizer cannon starts the race, and an estimated 25,000 runners will thunder past you
headed into the downtown area as they begin their 26.2 mile journey. Once they loop back
and cross the start line area again as they head towards Hawaii Kai, we break down, clean
up, and we're done, usually by 7:30 a.m. If you'd like to volunteer to help, please
contact president Arlyne Domingo at 946-0620, or e-mail her at [email protected]. All
volunteers will receive a Honolulu Marathon shirt and cap. Bring your friends and fellow
Jaycees to participate in one of the largest events in the state. Mahalo!

District 5 Competitions
Hear ye, hear ye! The District 5 (that's us!) year-end competitions will be held
on Sunday, October 24. These competitions will determine who will be the district
representatives for competitions at the Hawaii Jaycees' State Convention in December. The
competitions being held will be:
Speak Up - A short speech (3-6 minutes) on a predetermined topic in front of only 3 judges
and a timer. Speakers are categorized into three levels - Novice, Semi-professional, and
Professional - depending on their skill level, and will compete against other district
members at the same level. The top two speakers from each category advance to the State
level competitions.
Write Up - Competitors are given paper, instructions, a topic, and 30 minutes to write an
essay on the topic. Papers are judged anonymously by three judges. The winners advance to
the State level competitions.
C. William Brownfield Memorial Award - A resume and interview competition for the person
designated by each chapter as their best first year Jaycee. Ala Moana's best new
Jaycee will compete against other new Jaycees from District 5 chapters. The district
winner will advance to the State competition to face the other district winners.
John H. Armbruster Memorial Award - A resume and interview competition for the person
designated by each chapter as their best overall Jaycee. Ala Moana's best overall Jaycee
will compete against other District 5 chapters' Armbruster winners. The district winner
will advance to the State compettions to face the other district winners.
The state convention will be held on December 3-5 at the Royal Waikoloan on the Big
Island. The winners of the state competitions in all of the above categories will be given
the chance to represent the Hawaii Jaycees at the U.S. Jaycees national convention in
Chattanooga, TN in June, 2000.
If you're even vaguely interested, call president Arlyne and get the details.
These competitions are structured to allow you to compete in a very supportive,
non-threatening setting. You can't win unless you try! See you there!
